How to talk about extended weekends, public holidays and beach getaways

Have you ever taken an extra day off [dia de folga] to turn a public holiday [feriado oficial] into a long weekend [fim de semana prolongado]? Or planned a little getaway [uma escapada; uma viagem curta] to make the most of [aproveitar ao máximo] a holiday break [folga no feriado]?

In English, there are several natural ways to talk about these situations. Some expressions are casual and conversational, while others are more formal and suitable for professional or written communication.

- A beach getaway = a short holiday at the beach.

- A relaxing* beach break = a relaxing holiday by the beach.

1. 🗓️ Talking about long weekends

A long weekend is a weekend extended by a public holiday or an extra day off work.

📅 CASUAL ENGLISH

- We're going to have a long weekend.

- The holiday's on Monday, so we'll get a three-day weekend.

- We've got three days off! [Vamos ter três dias de folga.]

📅 FORMAL ENGLISH

- We will have an extended weekend. [Teremos um feriado/fim de semana prolongado].

- The public holiday falls on a Monday, giving us a three-day break.

- We will have three consecutive days off. [Teremos três dias consecutivos de descanso.]

💡 Remember:

LONG WEEKEND = a weekend extended by a holiday or an extra day off.

THREE-DAY WEEKEND = Friday, Saturday and Sunday OR Saturday, Sunday and Monday, depending on the holiday.

2. 📍 When does the holiday fall/land? [Quando cai o feriado?]

We use to fall / land on when talking about the day of the week or date on which a holiday occurs.

Expression| Example

Fall / land on Monday| The holiday falls on a Monday.

Fall / land on Tuesday| The public holiday falls on a Tuesday.

Fall / land on a weekday [dia de semana]| The holiday falls on a weekday this year.

Fall / land on a weekend| The holiday falls on a weekend this year.

3. 🔗 How do we say "emendar o feriado"?

English doesn't have one single expression that covers every situation. Here are three useful alternatives.

A. Take an extra day off  [tirar um dia a mais de folga; emendar a segunda quando o feriado cai na terça, por exemplo.]

Use this when you take an additional day off work.

🗣️ We're taking Monday off.

✍️ We have decided to take an additional day off on Monday. [Resolvemos emendar a segunda do feriado.]

B. Make a long weekend out of it [Emendar o feriado.]

A very natural, casual expression meaning that you use a holiday and an extra day off to create a longer break.

We're taking Monday off to make a four-day weekend out of it.

C. Extend the holiday break [Prolongar a folga/o descanso do feriado.]

A more formal expression, particularly useful in professional communication.

We're taking Monday off to extend the holiday break.

Our decision to take Monday off will allow us to extend the holiday break to four consecutive days. ]

💡 Memory tip:

TAKE A DAY OFF → the action.

EXTEND THE BREAK → the result.

MAKE A LONG WEEKEND OUT OF IT → the casual, conversational expression.

4. 🏖️ Talking about a beachfront hotel

How do you day hotel pé na areia in English?

The most useful expression is beachfront hotel.

5. 💬 Put it all together!

Let's compare the same situation in different registers.

🗣️ CASUAL ENGLISH – Everyday conversation

A: Do you have any plans for next month?

B: Yes! There's a holiday on Tuesday, so we're taking Monday off to make it a four-day weekend.

A: Nice! What are you going to do?

B: We're going to spend four days at a beachfront hotel. We just want to chill and enjoy the beach!

✍️ FORMAL ENGLISH – More polished communication

A: Do you have any plans for next month?

B: Yes. There's a public holiday on Tuesday, and we've decided to take Monday off, extending our break to four consecutive days.

A: That sounds lovely. Where are you planning to stay?

B: We are planning a four-day stay at a beachfront hotel. We would like to relax and enjoy some time by the sea.
