🔤 How to Pronounce "-ed" in Regular Verbs

When we say regular verbs in the past (like walked, played, wanted), the -ed ending sounds different depending on the final sound of the verb in the base form.

Final Sound in the Verb

Pronounce -ed like...

Example Verb

Sounds like...

A /t/ or /d/ sound

/ɪd/ like "id"

wanted, needed

wanted, needed

A voice sound (like b, g, l, m, n, r, v, z)

/d/ like "d"

cleaned, loved

cleand, lovd

A quiet sound (like k, p, f, s, sh, ch)

/t/ like "t"

walked, laughed

walkt, laught

✅ Tip: Don’t look at the spelling—listen to the last sound of the verb to know how to say -ed!

1. Say “-ed” like "id" [/ɪd/]:

Now, listen to the verb being read 3 times. Pause the recording and repeat each verb 3 times:
