O passado simples em inglês só é simples no nome... :-)
Na verdade, é na interrogativa e na negativa que a coisa se complica, por causa do uso do auxiliar DID, para o qual não existe correspondência em português.
Mas não temam! Nada que muitas horas de treino e estudo não resolvam! :-)
Para quem já tem um conhecimento básico de inglês, sugiro algumas aulas de vídeo, muito claras e didáticas, que achei no YouTube. A professora Jennifer tem uma pronúncia deliciosa e explica com exemplos e exercícios como funciona esse tempo de verbo. Além disso, ensina como pronunciar o -ed final dos verbos regulares.
A única coisa ruim das aulas da Jennifer é ver que ela come ovo frito em um tantão de manteiga, de noite (!), e ainda continua seca de magra. Que raiva! Grrrrr!
